The discussion about the negative impact of the fashion industry on people and the planet in terms of production practices and sustainability issues is becoming increasingly relevant.
Environmental exploitation is characteristic of the fashion industry and manifests itself in resource scarcity and environmental pollution. Water wastage from growing water-intensive crops like cotton depletes valuable water resources. Pollution from pesticides, chemicals, and microfibres generated through textile production and laundry processes damages oceans, rivers, and other surface waters, harming local communities, the environment, wildlife, and even entering the food chain.
This project conducted with 2nd year students in the Department of Textile and Fashion Design at Izmir University of Economics aims to raise awareness of the importance of water and highlight the issues around water and the fashion industry. It encourages students to examine the beauty of water by focusing on one specific visual reference of water in nature as a source of inspiration. In a bid to counteract the overproduction, overconsumption, and the throwaway culture which has risen parallel with fast fashion cycles, students are asked to adopt recycling as a strategy to reuse old garments and fabrics. With regards to water, the denim industry is one of the most destructive and water intensive sectors in the industry. To highlight this issue and to reflect the water colour scheme students are asked to work primarily with old denim products and blue fabric tones to create fabric manipulations and a small collection of little blue dresses.

Moda endüstrisinin üretim pratiklerinin insanlar ve gezegen üzerindeki olumsuz etkisi ve sürdürülebilirlik konusu giderek daha birbiriyle alakalı hale gelmektedir. Çevresel sömürü, moda endüstrisinin karakteristik bir özelliğidir ve kendini kaynak kıtlığı ve çevre kirliliği olarak gösterir. Pamuk gibi üretiminde yoğun su tüketimi gerektiren ürünlerden kaynaklanan su israfı değerli su kaynaklarını tüketmektedir. Tekstil hammaddelerinin üretiminde kullanılan böcek ilaçları, kimyasallar ve çamaşır yıkama süreçlerinde ortaya çıkan mikrofiberlerden kaynaklanan kirlilik okyanuslara, nehirlere ve diğer yüzey sularına karışarak yerel topluluklara, çevreye, vahşi yaşama zarar vermekte ve hatta gıda zincirine dahil olmaktadır.
İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi Tekstil ve Moda Tasarımı Bölümü 2. sınıf öğrencileri ile yürütülen bu proje, suyun önemi konusunda farkındalık yaratmayı ve su ile moda endüstrisi arasındaki bağlantıya dayalı konuları vurgulamayı amaçlamaktadır. Proje, ilham kaynağı olarak doğadaki suyun belirli bir görsel referansına odaklanıp suyun güzelliğini incelemek üzere öğrencileri teşvik etmektedir. Hızlı moda döngülerine paralel olarak yükselen aşırı üretim, aşırı tüketim ve kullan-at kültürüne karşı koymak amacıyla, öğrencilerden eski giysi ve kumaşları yeniden kullanmak üzere bir strateji olarak geri dönüşümü benimsemeleri istenmiştir. Su açısından ele alındığında, denim endüstrisi, tekstil sektöründeki en zararlı ve en çok su tüketen sektörlerden biridir. Bu konuyu vurgulamak ve suyun renk şemasını yansıtmak için öğrencilerden öncelikle eski denim ürünler ve mavi kumaş tonlarıyla çalışarak kumaş manipülasyonları ve mavi elbiselerden oluşan küçük bir koleksiyon oluşturmaları istenmiştir.
